What is the origin of the longhorn ? What type of animal was used to breed them originally. Are there historical/mythological references to them ? Does the horn type appear in the archaeological record ?

I may stand corrected but I believe they were just horned cattle. Then were developed by Robert Bakewell to become the Longhorn? I always understood it that the Whiter animals came from the North and were chunkier and darker more dairy type from the south. Not sure how accurate this is but I think even today the Whiter animals seem to be beefier!
