A question and two answers about the best crush to use for Longhorns: Any further advice or comments?
Q - I am planning to start a suckler herd in the near future and am considering going in for Longhorns. What sort of crush would I need? Also what about round feeders and the feed face on the housing? It looks like the horns would easily get stuck in the equipment used for polled cattle.
A - Depends on your budget, but we run a crush designed for horned cattle. Wife nearly lost fingers with it the other day. We are changing it and will go for either a cattlemaster from w and w mackie it the Pearson squeeze crush. Friends run highlands through conventional crushes as well. Just need a bit if patience and work fine.
A - We have longhorns and they have horns of all different shapes and sizes (see photo). We have a normal sized crush and haven't had any problems at all, if you're patient enough and you put them through enough times they soon get used to twisting their heads/horns to fit through!
