I am sure we all get a few of these. They can try the patience of a saint! What do you do to get them going?

We've been really lucky with this. We used to have problems with one particular cow if she had a bull calf (heifers always seemed less thick!) but I think this was mainly because of the size of her teats. A few days of helping the calf latch on and it was away. My mother seems to regularly have problems with "thick calves" although I have wondered if this is more due to her impatience to see them suck.

On behalf of Pat Quinn:
we found we had an iodine deficiency and now give high iodine bolus twice a year to calving cows. There has been an improvement with us. Worth a blood test of herd. Best wishes Pat Quinn
