Something somewhere in between I think! Not too big, "hard" and hungry that may not milk; but equally not something dumpy that won't grow and puts flesh on its back instead of pumping out milk! We in-winter [mid Nov - March/april] and try to "calve to the grass" in February/March/April. We try not to creep feed at grass unless the calves are visibly "going back". To my mind all of this actually helps to select for efficient cows that thrive, feed their calf well, get back in calf; and calves that have milky mothers thrive on forage but then can be easily finished when topped up with some concentrates
